Meet our Stars

Stars of Class 2021

Hi, I’m Nkarhi Promise Sibiya, a second-year
BSc Industrial Engineering student at Wits.
University life is both fun and challenging. In
high school, I was the best learner in the
Nkomazi West
Circuit. Though I was introverted then, I’ve
discovered a passion for art and showcased
my work at university events and on YouTube.
Despite financial struggles in my first year, I
persevered and ranked in the top 15% of
students at Wits, earning an invitation to join
the Golden Key International Honour Society.
Now, I aim to motivate high schoolers and
mentor young girls about the importance of
education, and I’m active in societies like the
Faculty of Best
Adversary.

Hi, I’m Lesedi Gracious Mhlongo, studying Bachelor of
Pharmacy at Rhodes University. I initially wanted to study
Medicine but wasn’t accepted, so I chose Pharmacy as my
second option, and I’ve grown to love it.
Adjusting to university life was challenging, especially
managing the heavy academic load. Workshops on time
management and support from mentors helped me find a
balance. However, securing funding remains a significant
challenge, as I haven’t found a bursary yet.
My short-term goal is to pass all my modules with flying
colors to improve my chances of getting funding.
Long-term, I aim to complete my degree on time and
possibly pursue a career in Medicine. My family has been a
great support system, encouraging me to stay positive
despite the challenges.
My advice? Don’t give up, even if things don’t go as planned
initially. Stay true to yourself and focus on your studies—
there’s nothing more rewarding than passing with
distinctions.

Stars of Class 2022

Hey there, I’m Njabulo Sibambo, a second year
Electrical and Electronics Engineering
student at the University of Johannesburg.
The transition from high school to university
wasn’t easy, but I’ve grown to love my
studies. University life has opened my eyes to
a whole new world, and my passion for
engineering keeps me going every day.
Despite financial struggles, I’ve excelled
academically, scoring distinctions in various
subjects. In the future, I aim to empower my
community by sharing knowledge and
nurturing talent among the youth.

Hey, I’m Nelcials Joseph Vilankulu, studying Computer
Science at the University of the Witwatersrand. My interest in
technology and its potential to uplift communities like mine
in Nkomazi led me down this path. Growing up in a place
where education is limited, I realized how even a basic
understanding of technology could transform lives. I’m
driven by the desire to bring meaningful change to my
community through tech. One of my proudest moments was
being honored as a top student, a recognition that motivates
me to keep pushing forward. To those still in high school, I
advise knowing what you want and staying true to yourself—
this clarity will be your anchor during the challenges of
university life.

Stars of Class 2023

Hey, I’m Mbuso Makhubela, a 17-year-old in
my final year of high school, Grade 12. I’m
aiming to study actuarial science and venture
into entrepreneurship. When I’m not studying,
I love playing video games and chess, which
help me push my limits and improve my
strategic thinking. One of my proudest
moments was placing in the top three at the
Eskom Maths Competition on a provincial
level. Looking ahead, I want to help my community
thrive by starting businesses that
create more employment opportunities.
